Power of a Flower - Mosaic Hang-Up
Making a Mosaic Hang-Up
It begins with a bag of wet clay. The clay is rolled into a slab and cut into tiles to create the desired design. The tiles are then cleaned and, in some cases, textured or carved and then dried slowly so the tiles don't warp. Once fully dried, the tiles are bisque fired, glazed to add color and sheen, and then fired again. Once the tiles are completely done, the process looks like your typical mosaic where the tiles are glued to a wooden base and then grout is applied to the gaps after the adhesive has fully dried. The final steps are to paint the wood, apply a sealant and then attach D-rings with wire to the back so it is ready to hang when it gets to you. A 30-pound Ook Picture hanger is provided so all you'll need is the perfect place to hang your new Mosaic Hang-Up and a hammer!
The Braving the Storm Mosaic Hang-up is made from Cone 5 Red B-mix clay and various commercial glazes. It is 20"x16"x1-1/8".
This piece was created as a tribute to those who went through difficult times and came out stronger and wiser on the other side. The struggling tree has grown new leaves and the birds fly close to encourage the new growth. For it is only in the tree's survival that the birds will thrive themselves. The geometric pattern that the scene rests on, symbolizes the structure and routine that sometimes is required to keep you on the upward path to happiness.
The glazes used in the background are muted to highlight the brilliance of the copper metallic glaze applied to the tree. The birds and grass have a glaze that is shiny and opalescent demonstrating that we all need those shining stars as support in our lives.
Pool Day
This Mosaic Hang-Up is made from Cone 5 Red B-mix clay, and various commercial glazes, and is 12" x 12" x 2-3/4". This piece was made from scraps of clay re-purposed from other works. The scrap tiles were cut to set the scene of a relaxing day by the pool inspired by a photo Rylee took while lying by her own pool in Phoenix, Arizona.
A pool day every now and then is a necessity for mental health. It's a day that you commit to doing nothing but enjoying the beauty of our world, the warmth of the sun, and the coolness of the pool once you get so hot you just have to jump in!
Abstract
Mosaic Hang-Ups
Re-using and Re-cycling is important to us at Maker’s Mosaics. Scrap clay pieces from other works get used to create these fun and funky abstract works of art. The shapes fit together in unique ways that decide on their own what the final design will look like. This allows the maker to step back and let the clay do all of the design work!
Mandalas
Mandala is a Sanskrit word for circle and is used in Eastern Religious rituals as an instrument of meditation. Through the process of creating the Flower Mandala (Left image) and the Pier One Mandala (Right image), Rylee felt the repetitive pattern and tediousness of keeping the tiny pieces together through each step of the process brought her peace and tranquility. She hopes that it will bring the same to you as you view them in your own sacred space.
